Lahore, May. 1 (ANI): Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was severely injured in an attack by inmates in a Pakistan jail, has gone into 'non-reversible' coma and is heading to 'brain death', said the doctors struggling to save his life.
However, the medical board examining Sarabjit have said they are not in a position to declare him brain dead without consulting the authorities and his family, reports The Dawn.
A senior doctor at the Jinnah Hospital, where Sarabjit is being treated, said the victim's heart is beating but without brain function, as a result of profound head injuries.
After an extensive physical examination, the doctors had the unanimous opinion that Sarabjit was absolutely unresponsive and unable to breathe without ventilator.
The doctor said the authorities had been informed about the failing health of Sarabjit.
Sarabjit, 49, sustained several injuries, including a skull fracture, when six prisoners attacked him in Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday afternoon. He was hit on the head with bricks and his neck and torso cut with sharp weapons.
He was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990.
His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former president Pervez Musharraf.
The outgoing Pakistan Peoples Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite period in 2008.
Sarabjit's family says he is the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state. (ANI)
