New York, Apr 30 (ANI): Golf's US Open is set to be hosted by the Venerable Merion Golf Club for the first time in 32 years.
The scene of Ben Hogan's 1-iron, Bobby Jones' Grand Slam and Lee Trevino's playoff win over Jack Nicklaus, Merion is both historic and unique, the New York Daily News reports.
United States Golf Association's (USGA) executive director Mike Davis said that more birdies, along with 11 holes featuring blind shots and with a brutal finish, would be made at this US Open at Merion than has been seen in recent history.
Stating that Merion is his favorite course since he played the 2005 U.S. Amateur there, defending champion Webb Simpson said that golfers would have the best opportunities at the Merion as both a long player or short player can play equally on the course.
However, Simpson further said that a player with a good wedge game and a good mind will have the advantage because of the birdie opportunities, although he added that a golfer will have to play very carefully at the club to protect himself against its tricky pitches.
While Merion has hosted more USGA championships-18 - than any other club, the USGA was certain that the 1981 U.S. Open, won by David Graham, would be the last one played there, the report added. (ANI)
