87 pc illegal immigrants would seek US citizenship: Poll

Washington, Tue, 16 Apr 2013 ANI

Washington, Apr. 16 (ANI): A whopping 87 percent of illegal immigrants have said they would try and seek U.S. citizenship if given the chance, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by Latino Decisions and paid for by two pro-immigration reform groups, found the remaining 13 percent were not sure if they would try to become citizens.

According to Politico, the eagerness of illegal immigrants to become U.S. citizens has become a flash point in the ongoing debate over comprehensive immigration reform.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush cited the relatively low number of immigrants who sought to become citizens after immigration reform in the 1980s as a reason not to include a pathway to citizenship in the latest effort, the report said.

The survey generally painted a picture of illegal immigrants as settled members of American society who just happen to lack legal status.

The poll found that only 11 percent of those polled have lived in the United States for less than five years, and 81 percent have been living in the United States since they were under 30 years old.

Nearly 85 percent have a spouse, child or other relative with American citizenship. (ANI)
