Cuba can compete in a World Cup: Coach

Cuba,Sports, Sat, 13 Apr 2013 IANS

Havana, April 13 (IANS) The Cuban team which will participate in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey, next June, may "prove" the Caribbean island has qualities to compete in an international championship, technical director Raul Gonzalez Triana said here.

"Our main goal is to prove that we can compete at this level," Triana remarked, according to JIT, the official site of the National Recreation and Sports Institute (INDER).

The 26 members of the national pre-selection have been trained since April 3 at the Pedro Marrero stadium in Havana, reports Xinhua.

"We are conducting a physical rearrangement work, because many players participated with their provincial teams in the national championship, which is a difficult tournament, with five or six games in a month," the head coach said.

The Cuban U-20 selection won the ticket in the tournament of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean ( CONCACAF) held last March in Puebla, Mexico, where the island ranked fourth, behind Mexico, the United States and El Salvador, in that order.

The FIFA U-20 in Turkey will be held from June 21 to July 13 attended by 24 countries and regions. This would be Cuba's first attendance to a World Cup of this category.
