Nepal Maoists' splinter group rejects talks offer

Kathmandu , Fri, 05 Apr 2013 ANI

Kathmandu, April 5 (Xinhua-ANI): In what appears as a signal of further putting off the election date, the opposition CPN-Maoist, the breakaway faction of the UCPN-Maoist, on Friday rejected a dialogue offer by the country's four major parties to resolve the outstanding issues.

A central committee meeting of the party held at Gongbu of Kathmandu endorsed a one-point agenda saying that they would not participate in any meeting with the major parties until their demand is met.

"As everybody knows, our demand has been that the incumbent non- political government be substituted with an all-party political government. We are not going to buzz until that," said Dev Gurung, a leader of CPN-Maoist, which is led by Mohan Baidya.

The high-level political mechanism was expecting talks with the Baidya group of Maoists on Friday in hope of paving way for the second Constituent Assembly election at the earliest.

The Baidya group has been obstructing election-related preparations by vandalizing district offices of Election Commission and abducting officials.

Just on Wednesday in middle western Terai plains of Nepal, they captured 58 acres land of Khil Raj Regmi, the chairperson of the interim government.

The Election Commission had to put off voter roll update works following stiff obstruction from the splinter faction of the Maoists, which after allying with 32 fringe parties has formed an opposition group.

Currently, the high-level political mechanism is led by UCPN- Maoist chairperson Prachanda. Friday's meeting of the mechanism was held informally following the rejection of the talks offer by Baidya's party.

"The four parties today authorized Mr. Prachanda to bring the disgruntled groups to talks table and convince them for election," said Minendra Rijal, a Nepali Congress leader.

Nepal has been attempting for the second legislative election after it was declared a de-facto republic in 2006. The first election of Constituent Assembly was held in 2008. (Xinhua-ANI)
