Sydney, Mar 29 (ANI): Former fast bowler Damien Fleming has said the Australian team he would pick for the first Test matches against England in Trent Bridge would have beleaguered vice-captain Shane Watson as a genuine all rounder in it.
With Australia's nightmare tour of India now over and the Sheffield Shield season done and dusted, Aussie players will have few opportunities of improving their chances of selection before July 10, Fox Sports reports.
With that in mind, Fox Sports commentators and former Australian cricketers Mark Waugh, Brendon Julian, Damien Fleming and Greg Blewett went out on limb and named the 12 players they think should be in the team for the first clash against the Old Enemy, the paper said.
While Julian wants to see Watson opening the batting, Fleming has other ideas, as he would prefer to use Watson as a genuine all-rounder, batting at No.6 and bowling his effective medium-pacers.
Fleming said he is considering Watson as an all-rounder so he has got to be bowling, adding he would just think you have got to pick the top six batsmen, and that is it for him
Pressed by Julian on what would happen if Watson didn't want to bowl due to his litany of injuries, Fleming stood firm, saying if he is chairman of selectors, so my chat with Watson is, 'mate, you're bowling'.
Damien Fleming's XII: Ed Cowan, David Warner, Phillip Hughes, Michael Clarke, Usman Khawaja, Shane Watson, Matthew Wade, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Ryan Harris (ANI)
