Australia held to 2-2 draw in World Cup qualifier

Australia,Sports, Tue, 26 Mar 2013 IANS

Sydney, March 26 (IANS) Australia avoided a shocking upset Tuesday after the Socceroos recovered from two goals down to draw with Oman 2-2 in an Asian qualifier for the 2014 World Cup.

Brett Holman's 25-yard strike in the 85th minute capped a remarkable rally after Australia had fallen behind to Omani forward Abdul Mubarak's early strike and an own goal by Mile Jedinak just after half time, reports Xinhua.

Tim Cahill proved to be Australia's talisman with a powerful headed goal in the 51st to keep the hosts in the contest but a string of fine saves by Oman's Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi kept the hosts from finding the winner.

Australia and Oman improve to six points in Group B, seven points behind Japan which was playing away to Jordan (four points) later Tuesday.
