Tibetan poet denied passport by China to visit US for award function

Melbourne, Fri, 08 Mar 2013 ANI

Melbourne, Mar 8 (ANI): A Tibetan poet, who is set to receive an award for courage from the United States, has been denied a passport by the Chinese authorities, which may end her hopes of getting the award.

Outspoken poet, author and activist Tsering Woeser is one of the 10 women named for the International Women's Day honour in Washington for her efforts in writing about the Tibetans who have burned themselves to protest the Chinese occupation of Tibet, the Herald Sun reports.

Woeser said that the police denied her request for a passport like they have been doing for years, adding that she was told that she has been deemed as a threat to society possibly because of her activism. (ANI)
