Pak scientist Chishti arrives back home after release from India

Karachi, Sun, 16 Dec 2012 ANI

Karachi, Dec. 16 (ANI): Pakistani microbiologist Dr Khalil Chishti whose release from Indian prison was ordered by the Supreme Court, has reached his home in North Nazimabad.

Chishti, 80, was allowed to go home on 'compassionate grounds' in May on the condition that he would return to Indian custody, so it can hear his appeal against conviction in a murder case.

The Indian apex court on Wednesday issued orders for Chishti's release, reports The News.

Chishti spent 14 months in an Indian jail as he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2011 for killing a man after a fight in Ajmer in 1992.

He was found guilty after an unusually long 18-year trial during which he was put under house arrest.

President Asif Ali Zardari had raised the issue of Chishti's release at his lunch meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a private visit to India in April this year. (ANI)
