Egypt votes to keep Sharia law as 'main source of constitution'

Cairo , Fri, 30 Nov 2012 ANI

Cairo, Nov 30 (ANI): Egypt's Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting the country's new constitution has voted to keep "the principles of sharia" as the main source of legislation.

The clause states that "Islam is the state religion, and the Arabic language is its official language. The principles of Islamic Sharia are the main source of legislation."

According to Gulf News, the panel is voting on the constitution article by article, and unanimously approved keeping the formulation from the past constitution, which was suspended after a popular uprising overthrew Hosni Mubarak in early 2011.

A still unagreed clause seeks to explain the clause on Islamic law in terms of Sunni Muslim jurisprudence, the report said.

According to the report, the assembly also agreed on a clause stating that the principles of Christian and Jewish legal traditions would guide their personal and religious affairs.

The Islamist-dominated panel was tasked to write a new constitution for Egypt and

voting began on Thursday on the document's final draft. (ANI)
