Hodgson contemplating shrink's help to banish England's penalty demons

London, Tue, 20 Nov 2012 ANI

London, Nov 20(ANI): England manager Roy Hodgson has conceded for the first time that he is considering bringing in a psychologist to solve Three Lion's penalty shoot-out curse.

Hodgson is currently staging a full-scale review of why England have got such a wretched record after becoming the latest manager to suffer heartbreak against Italy in Euro 2012 last summer.

That was the sixth time England have crashed out of a major tournament on penalties and they have won just one out of seven shoot-outs.

It is a curse which has left Hodgson admitting he fears it has now become a mental problem for English players at major tournaments - and he is determined it will not happen again.

Five months on from England losing on penalties to Italy, Hodgson confessed he has been approached by a sports shrink and is seriously considering using a psychologist.

"Of course you get players to practice. We practice as much as any other team. There are lots of things to think about," the Daily Mirror quoted Hodgson, as saying.

"We are involved at the moment, reviewing if there is more things we can do. I have not closed any doors. Every day you get ideas from psychologists, people who believe it is all in the mind. So, as a result, we do not dismiss anything," he added.

"The bottom line is you need confident players. You need players who have that cold streak, like many golfers or tennis players, going into the final of and - in New York at the US Open - it is all down to a tie-break at 6-6 in the final set," he said.

Hodgson added: "The other guy is serving and he has two serves for the title. How do you deal with that? How do you find the mental strength to hit the ball back over the net? There is a definitely an element of mental strength." (ANI)
