Ferguson tells Man U to stop gifting early goals to opposition
London, Nov 17(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has told his defenders to improve their performance and stop gifting early goals to opposition ahead of their Premier League clash with Norwich City on Saturday at the Carrow Road.
United have gone behind in seven of their 11 Premier League games this season, but have rallied to win five of those matches.
Although United hold a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, Ferguson knows they cannot keep giving their opponents a start.
"We have players who can change the course of a game, and there's a goal threat about us. But we can't continue giving teams a start. It's not that we underestimate anyone, we just don't expect a Manchester United team to be two behind," the Daily Mirror quoted Ferguson, as saying.
"You go into games believing you'll be two ahead rather than two behind, and it's happened a few times this season - we were two behind at Tottenham and were unlucky not to get back. But it won't happen all the time. It's not a gimme that you can come back from two goals down," he added.
"That's the area where hopefully we'll improve. Hopefully, we'll defend better and not lose the advantage of what we experienced last week," he said.
United's forwards have plundered 29 goals in the Premier League already this season, which has bailed out their defence, but Ferguson said he expected more from his defence.
Ferguson said: "You don't expect to be behind by two goals. You always find that part difficult and it is frustrating. There's no consistent theme to what's happening with our defending. This is the area where we really have to improve." (ANI)
