England relieved after Trott's hand scan rules out fracture

Johannesburg, Tue, 04 Sep 2012 ANI

Johannesburg, Sep 4(ANI): England breathed a sigh of relief after it was revealed through scans that batsman Jonathan Trott hadn't suffered a fracture in his hand during Sunday's one-day victory over South Africa.

Trott suffered a sore blow on his right hand after being hit by a short ball from fast bowler Dale Steyn during his side's six-wicket win at Lord's.

With the 31-year-old showing obvious signs of uneasiness during a century stand with Ian Bell, there were fears South African-born Trott might have broken bones and that would have forced England, who lead the series 2-1, to call up a replacement for the fifth and final one-day international at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

But an England and Wales Cricket Board update revealed on Monday there was no break. Trott and the team's medical staff will wait for 24 hours before deciding if he is fit to feature in the last match against the Proteas.

"X-ray. Further medical assessment required tomorrow (Tuesday)," Sports24 quoted an ECB statement, as saying. (ANI)
