London, Aug 30(ANI): Andrew Strauss, who announced his decision to step down as England Test captain and retire from international cricket is now touted as a future Tory MP.
British gambling company Ladbrokes is offering odds of 50/1 that he would stand in a by-election and 16/1 to be an MP after the next election.
Strauss is a known conservative supporter and raised 25,000 pounds for David Cameron by offering himself as an auction prize at fundraising dinner last year.
Coincidentally, Strauss' decision to retire from cricket came on the same day when former chick-lit author Louise Mensch formally stood down as Conservative MP for Corby.
Fellow Tory MPs in the Northamptonshire town were positive at the idea of the ex-England captain coming out to bat for them in the by-election, where the party is on a muggy wicket.
"I couldn't rule out voting for Andrew Strauss as a Conservative candidate if the rumours were to be true. I would like our next MP to be somebody who lives in the constituency and who has Corby and East Northamptonshire at heart," The Daily Mirror quoted Councilor Rob McKellar, as saying.
Tory sources at Westminster admitted that landing the cricketer would be a huge catch as a Parliamentary candidate, but no formal talks have taken place and party insiders said it was too late for Corby. (ANI)
