Islamabad, Aug. 29 (Xinhua-ANI): At least nine soldiers were killed when some unidentified militants attacked a security check post in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of South Waziristan on Wednesday, and the troops killed 10 militants in the retaliatory attack, local media reported.
Local TV channel Samma reported that in an early morning attack, an unknown number of heavily-armed militants stormed a check post, set up by Pakistan Army in Tiazra area of restive South Waziristan agency, killing nine soldiers right on the spot and injuring four others.
Shootout between militants and troops is still going on in the area, some media reports said.
In retaliation, troops killed at least 10 militants and injured a dozen others. Identities of the attackers are not determined yet.
There is no official confirmation of the incident yet.
Clashes between militants and security forces in the northwest tribal area of Pakistan started last week when over 100 Afghan militants crossed Pakistan-Afghan border and launched a series of attacks on the army in Lower Dir and Bajaur agency.
Local media reported that at least eight soldiers and peace militiamen were killed in clashes in Lower Dir and Bajaur Agency. A total of 31 militants also lost their lives in retaliatory attacks by the army with the support of local pro-government people.
Following the attack by Afghan militants, clashes also broke out in other areas including South Waziristan. (Xinhua-ANI)
