Sydney, Aug. 23 (ANI): Australians who are caught in online dating scams are more likely to lose money than victims of other cyber frauds.
The Australian Institute of Criminology Consumer Fraud Taskforce found that although the number of dating scams was low, the proportion of people who lost money was high.
"Dating scams were the single category most likely to result in a financial loss or the disclosure of personal details," the report said.
According to news.com.au, the report said that Australians over 65 years of age were the most likely to be caught in dating scams.
The increase in scams has highlighted the importance of a federal parliamentary inquiry into cyber safety for senior Australians.
According to the report, the victims typically sent personal details to potential 'dates', who used that information to cheat them.
Other cons reported included lottery scams, requests for money to be sent overseas, inheritance scams, and requests for password confirmations, the report said. (ANI)
