Damascus, Aug. 22 (ANI): Syria has given hints that it is prepared to discuss the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad.
The government said that it would, however, discuss the proposal in a way that was almost certainly 'too vague' to be of any interest to opposition groups fighting to overthrow him.
According to The Telegraph, Qadri Jamil, the country's deputy prime minister, who was visiting Russia, said Syria would not allow negotiations predicated on Assad standing down.
"As for his resignation, making his resignation a condition for dialogue effectively makes holding such a dialogue impossible," the report him as saying, adding: "During the negotiating process any issues can be discussed, and we are ready to discuss even this issue."
According to the report, most Syrian opposition parties and rebels fighting in the country have said they will not accept any solution to the crisis short of Assad's resignation.
The West has taken a similar stance, backing an Arab League proposal under which he would hand over power to Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa, the report said.
Jamil also dismissed a warning by President Barack Obama that any hint of deployment or transfer of Syria's chemical weapons was a 'Red Line' that could lead to American intervention, the report added.
"Obama's threats are simply propaganda linked to the US elections," Jamil said. (ANI)
