Sydney, Aug 15 (ANI): Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has denied media reports suggesting that he has decided to grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

"The rumour of asylum for Assange is false. No decision has yet been taken. Awaiting report from the foreign ministry," Correa tweeted.

Correa's statement came after The Guardian reported that Ecuador was set to grant Assange asylum, the Herald Sun reports.

"Ecuador will grant asylum to Julian Assange," the paper had quoted an official in the Ecuadorean capital, Quito, as saying.

Assange has been holed up at Ecuador's London embassy since 19 June, when he officially requested political asylum in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over allegations of sexual assaults.

But he also fears being extradited to the US to face charges over WikiLeaks' publishing of a trove of secret documents. (ANI)
