Ankara, Fri, 27 Jul 2012 ANI

Ankara, July 27 (Xinhua-ANI): A total of 26 tons of cannabis were seized on Friday in a police anti-trafficking operation in the province of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, local newspaper Today's Zaman reported on its website.

Diyarbakir Governor Mustafa Toprak was quoted as saying investigations will continue into the marijuana cultivation by the banned Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) and the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), an umbrella political organization that includes the PKK.

He said the operation was one of the biggest carried out to crack down on the drug trafficking in the towns of Lice, Hazro and Kocakoy in Diyarbakir, where the PKK and KCK grow cannabis, adding that additional operations were conducted in three other villages in Diyarbakir.

The PKK is labeled as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States, and drug trafficking is a main source of financial income of the PKK. (Xinhua-ANI)
