Viswanathan Anand hopes Indian players will win medals at London Olympics

Patna, Tue, 24 Jul 2012 ANI

Patna, July 24 (ANI): World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand has expressed confidence over Indian players winning medals at the forthcoming London Olympics 2012.

"Well, like everyone else I'd like India to do well. I think this time if we get five medals, that is a reasonable expectation to have I think and I feel its not even very unrealistic, we have lot of possible contenders so five seems to be very doable and I feel my fingers crossed for it," Anand told media here.

Anand further said the game of chess requires luck along with good technique.

"Even when things are going very well you need a few things to fall in place of your own, you cannot control everything. In one of the best tournaments I ever played, the world championship in Delhi in 2000, I still needed my opponent to miss an easy win in one of the tie-breaks," he said. " I think that tournament I dominated, I won all my matches without getting into tie-breaks expect that one match I needed a huge amount of luck to win so that is what I mean, even in your best tournaments you'll need something to go your way," he added

The Olympic 2012 is scheduled to start from July 27 in London and would conclude on August 12.

This year, 81 athletes from India will participate in the big event. (ANI)
