Ex-Romanian PM shoots self after ordered to serve 2-year prison term

Bucharest, Thu, 21 Jun 2012 ANI

Bucharest (Romania), June 21 (ANI): A former Romanian prime minister has shot and wounded himself in an apparent suicide attempt, hours after he was sentenced to two-years in prison over corruption charges.

Adrian Nastase had appealed a March 30 court ruling that sentenced him to prison for illegally raising funds for a failed presidential campaign, but the Supreme Court upheld the sentence, sending shockwaves across the nation.

According to state run media the General Prosecutor's office said it was investigating a suicide attempt by Nastase.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta, a close ally, visited Nastase at the hospital and said his condition was 'under control,' Fox News reports.

"It is my right and obligation to visit him. I couldn't stay at home without seeing what was wrong," the report quoted Ponta, as saying.

According to some news agencies reports, Nastase had shot himself in the neck after police arrived at his home to arrest him.

Nastase, 61, has insisted that the case against him is politically motivated and indicated he will take it to the European Court of Human Rights. (ANI)
