Bahrain hardline group seeks death penalty for insulting Prophet Mohammad

Manama , Fri, 15 Jun 2012 ANI

Manama, June 15 (ANI): A Salafist society in Bahrain is seeking death penalty for a blogger who posted offensive remarks about Prophet Mohammad and his wife Aysha.

The Al Asala Society argued that the death penalty would 'help preserve the status of Islam and protect Muslim society from sedition.'

"The man has a twisted and distorted mind and he should be put to death for his corrupt beliefs and postings," the statement said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Halim Murad, a lawmaker representing the Al Asala society in the lower chamber of the bicameral parliament, said that he wanted the government to endorse a draft law that stipulates the death penalty for religion offenders.

"Under this law, anyone found insulting the prophet [PBUH] or his wife Aisha will be sentenced to death or given a life sentence," The Gulf News quoted Murad, as saying.

"I have already spoken to the government on endorsing the draft because it has robust religious and legal premises, protects the society and upholds the respect that all Muslims have for their prophet," he added. (ANI)
