Radioactive waste from Japan shipped to China

China,Environment/Wildlife,Health/Medicine,Defence/Security, Tue, 05 Jun 2012 IANS

Beijing, June 5 (IANS) China has intercepted 1,127 tonnes of waste metals from Japan with excessive gamma radiation that was shipped to the eastern coastal city of Ningbo, customs officials said Tuesday.

The radiation levels of the waste metals -- imported by a metal recycling company -- were twice the national standard, and hazardous to the human body and the environment, Xinhua reported citing customs officials.

The metals contained caesium-137, a radioactive isotope of caesium.

The customs department has ordered the cargo to be returned.

The department has intercepted a total of 8,544 tonnes of waste metals with excessive radiation imported from Japan since the Japanese nuclear disaster of March 2011, an official said.
