Mogadishu, May 26 (Xinhua-ANI): A UN envoy for Somalia on Friday hailed the progress towards the end of Somalia's transition, saying that the transition period is scheduled to end on Aug. 20.
The statement came as Augustine Mahiga, the UN secretary- general's special representative for Somalia, was briefing the press following three days of meetings in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the principal signatories of the Roadmap to end Somalia's transition, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here.
"He said the meetings in Addis were ultimately successful, and that the agreements made there cleared away any political obstacles, allowing for the transition to go forward as planned," Nesirky said. "That transition period is scheduled to end on 20 August."
"Mr. Mahiga said that there is no time to lose, as the Somali parties work to ensure a process that is participatory, legitimate, inclusive, transparent and Somali-owned," the spokesman said.
Somalia has been undergoing a peace and national reconciliation process after decades of warfare, with the Horn of Africa country' s Transitional Federal Institutions currently implementing the Roadmap, devised in September last year, that spells out priority measures to be carried out before the current transitional governing arrangements end on Aug. 20.
