Moscow , Fri, 18 May 2012 ANI

Moscow, May 18 (Xinhua-ANI): Russia has put a Canadian communications satellite into space, the Federal Space Agency Roscosmos said Friday.

Russia's Proton-M carrier rocket, with a Nimiq 6 telesat on board, blasted off from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan at 11:12 p.m. Moscow time (1912 GMT) on Thursday, the space agency said.

Russian Khrunichev Space Research and Production Center spokesman Alexander Bobrenev told local media that the research center has recorded the satellite's separation from the Briz-M upper stage.

It has reached its geostationary orbit with an apogee of 35,000 km, Bobrenev said.

According to nasaspaceflight.com, Nimiq 6 is a direct broadcast satellite built by Space System/Loral, a leading satellite developer. The satellite has a weight of 4,500 kg and a design life of 15 years.

Equipped with 32 Ku-band transponders, it will provide direct broadcast services over Canada. (Xinhua-ANI)
