Maken accuses MCD of siphoning off development funds

New Delhi, Thu, 12 Apr 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 12 (ANI): Congress leader and Sports Minister Ajay Maken has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) of siphoning off funds meant for development of civic amenities.

"It feels very sad to see that there is inefficiency in the system. The money allotted for the work is not fully utilised and funds are often misused. Therefore, in Delhi state, the work is done only on paper and nothing concrete can be seen," Maken told media.

"The Central and Delhi governments (both headed by Congress party) provide enough funds for the developmental work and there are golden opportunities for betterment.

However, the Corporation has not made use of the opportunities. Thus, I think, the last five years of MCD rule can be summed up as stories on losing on opportunities," he added.

Congress party's star campaigner Nagma said that the focus in the civic body elections would be basic public facilities.

"The major issues would include the basic needs of people, such as playing grounds, education, drainage systems, roads and other such problems. If Congress party candidates come to power the work will be done faster as Congress also rules in the state and I am confident that the progress and change would be evident to people," said Nagma.

The MCD elections will be held on April 15. Counting of votes would take place on April 17. (ANI)
