Herath stars as Lanka thrashes England by 75 runs in Galle Test

Colombo, Thu, 29 Mar 2012 ANI

Colombo, Mar 29(ANI): Sri Lanka has beaten England by 75 runs in the first Test match at Galle, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Left arm spinner Rangana Herath starred for the hosts, snaring 12 wickets in the match, exploiting the spinner friendly pitches as well as England's inability to counter spin.

England was set an unlikely target of 340 to win, but were bundled out for 264.

Jonathan Trott's brilliant century couldn't prevent them escaping their fourth consecutive defeat abroad since becoming ICC Test-champions.

Herath had figures of 6-97 in England's second innings, whereas off spinner Suraj Randiv grabbed four for 74 runs.

Trott scored 112 of 336 deliveries, but his dismissal, ended any realistic hopes of the tourists may have had of a win.

Wicket-keeper Matthew Prior was the only player who provided meaningful support to Trott, scoring 41 of 108 balls.

This was Sri Lanka's first home Test victory since legendary off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan retired in 201o from international cricket. (ANI)
