New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) The Delhi High Court asked the director of education (DoE) to hold an inquiry against a school in the capital which has removed two students belonging to the economically weaker section (EWS) of the society.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar asked DoE to hold an inquiry against Suraj Bhan DAV Public School, Vasant Vihar and submit a status report by Oct 1.
The court also issued notice to the school asking for an explanation as to why the two students were removed from the school.
Somya Giri, a student of class IV and her brother Shubham Giri, student of class III were admitted in the school in 2004-05 under EWS quota.
Advocate Ashok Agarwal, appearing for the students, informed the court that the school admitted both these students in 2004-2005 under EWS quota and started making demands for deposit of full fees and other charges though these students were entitled to free education.
"Since July 2008, the school was repeatedly threatening the parents to either deposit the fees and other charges or the names of the students would be struck off from the rolls. Since the demand of the school was illegal and the parents were unable to afford the school fees, the school in violation of the high court order and also of Delhi government order removed the students Sep 20," Agarwal said.
He further added that the school is situated on land allotted by the Delhi Development Authority on concessional rates with the condition that the school shall admit students from the economically weaker sections to the extent of 25 percent and grant them free education.
