Watson says Oz cricket 'nowhere near the heights' of 2006 Ashes win

Sydney , Fri, 07 Jan 2011 ANI

Sydney, Jan 7(ANI): Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has said that Australian cricket is "nowhere near the heights" it was in 2006, when they had thrashed England 5-0 to win the last Ashes series at home.

When asked what state Australian cricket is in, Watson said: "Nowhere near the heights it was four years ago."

Pressed on how the series loss would affect the public's confidence in the side, the all-rounder admitted a backlash was likely.

"With our performances we've showed over the last little while, we've got to turn it around. There's no doubt it does come down to the players alone to be able to turn that around," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Watson, as saying.

"No doubt there will be an inquest into what's happened and we do have to turn it around."We don't want to be losing the support we've had for such a long time with the Australian fans, we've got to play so much better to be able to keep the faith," he added.

England has won the fifth and final Test in Sydney to win the series 3-1, and retain the Ashes urn.

It is also the first time since the memorable series of 1986-87 that England has won the Ashes on Australian soil. (ANI)
