PPP will honour Salmaan Taseer's memory by continuing his mission: Bilawal Bhutto

Karachi, Fri, 07 Jan 2011 ANI

Karachi, Jan 7(ANI): Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has expressed his grief over the brutal assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, and said the party would honour his memory by continuing his mission.

Taseer was assassinated by Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, one of his own elite security force protectors, who opened fire on him on Tuesday because of the governor's support for the release of Pakistani-Christian woman Asia Bibi, who has been sentenced to death on blasphemy charges.

"I join the workers of PPP in mourning the tragic assassination of Taseer," the Daily Times quoted Bilawal, as saying.

Taseer had joined his mother Benazir Bhutto, grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and hundreds of PPP martyrs, who laid down their lives for their beliefs, he added.

"Our party's struggle to uphold the values of Islam and democracy will continue," Bilawal pledged.

"An egalitarian, tolerant and a just order, which serves all the people, remains our goal," the PPP chief said, adding that Taseer was targeted for "pursuing these noble goals, and we will honour his memory by continuing the mission, which he joined as a student and served until his death."
