Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Fedra Village (Gujarat), Sept 19 (ANI): Fire officials rescued around 100 passengers stranded on highway due to flash floods near Fedra village in Gujarat on Thursday.

The region has received heavy rainfall in last 24 hours and many places have turned into virtual islands making movement difficult.

The fire officials who rescued the stranded passengers said, the level of the water was not high but the flow was strong enough to wash away people.

"Buses and other vehicles are stranded on the bridge but the passengers are safe, but cannot cross over to this side. We have given them food," said L.S. Daftur, fire official.

The passengers traveling to Surat were left stranded when the buses carrying them got stuck on the National Highway.

"Due to heavy rains, many people were stranded on the bridge. The villagers went to their rescue, but the tractor could not reach there due to flow of the water and several people were washed away in the floods," said Jagdish, a resident.

Floodwaters have submerged over 20 villages for the last three days in Gujarat.

At least ten villages including Dhingana, Loliyadeep, Thebra and Bagodara are worst affected as the rainwater has flooded the villages and life has become standstill. (ANI)
