India ranked 18th in the Global Corruption Barometer

Dec 07:  In a global corruption watchdog survey India is ranked 18 th while its neighbour Pakistan has on the 6 th spot in the world’s most corrupt nations list. Cameroon topped the list while Japan and South Korea are among the least corrupt nations as Berlin-based watchdog Transparency International (TI) said in a world wide survey conducted over 63,000 people of 60 nations.

According to Watchdog Transparency International that conducts the survey every year for measuring the barometer of most corrupt nations, “Police and Politicians are reported the most tainted people in the globe for asking bribery from the public for sorting out their problems.” “The poor are forced to most petty bribery whether in developed nations or in developing nations”. The study of Global Corruption Barometer covers all sorts of nation, big or small and rich or poor and developed or developing.

The figure was prepared on response of people’s experience, as they had witnessed during last one year. It doesn’t represent the rating of the country but it shows the degree of corruption, which were being conducted on the globe between June and September 2007 in which the 63,000 people across the globe participated including 1069 Indians. The people who involved in this survey were asked to rate these entities on a 5-point scale where 5 meant extremely corrupt and 1 meant not corrupt.

As per 2007 survey, the prediction for India became worse as against 2006 survey in which most Institutions and departments were reported in deep corruption excluding Armed forces where the reported figure were declined from 1.9 in 2006 to 1.8. On the other hand political parties and police were gain more complaint of asking bribes and were figured on 4.6 as against 4.5 of previous year.

An average of 25 percent of Indians had complaint for asking bribes in a wide range of institutions and department include Police and Political parties, medical and education service sectors and for getting permission or registry. As per respondents indication seventy-six percent raised fingers towards political parties followed by police (72%) educational services (45%) registry/permit (42%) and medical services (39%).

On the global level, judiciary in most of the country have also been reported in plunging deep corruption and the judges and practitioners ask money for dismissing a case or influencing a verdict in a court case.

This year Cameroon has been found most complaints of asking bribes with the gigantic 79 per cent of its population having paid a bribe in single year duration of 2006-2007. 44 percent of Pakistani had paid the bribe that slotted Pakistan on the 6 th position.

In terms of petty bribery, several countries include EU nations, America continents and Asia and Africa were included in the hit list. Albania, Cambodia, Cameroon, Macedonia, Kosovo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania and Senegal are among those countries where 30 percent or more people became the victim of paying bribes.

The rate of paying and asking minor bribery were increased awfully in the globe. 22 percent people in the Asia Pacific region and 12 percent in south-east region were increased in paying bribery in this year as against 15% and 8% in 2006 respectively.

The future of these corruption roofed countries also seems disappointing as per TI report suggests. In the globe, all regions except Africa are very dubious about the effectiveness of their government's actions against corruption while some progress has been reported in Nigeria and Ghana that were on the top in last year’s list as watchdog said.

The lack of anti-corruption vigilance and law is the main reason in the regions to promote the bribery as per watchdog reported.
