London, Sept 16 (ANI): A civil war amongst the rank and file of Scotland Yard seems to have undermined the credibility of police forces across the United Kingdom, a senior police officer, has said. Derek Barnett, vice president of the Police Superintendents' Association, criticised Tarique Ghaffur for his "overt publicity seeking moves" and his infighting with Commissioner Sir Ian Blair, for undermining the work of police nationwide.
In a speech to be delivered at the annual conference for the association, which represents 1,600 superintendents across England and Wales, the Telegraph quotes Barnett as saying that overtly publicity seeking moves are damaging the credibility of the police service in spite of the superb work being performed by police officers daily.
Barnett further says, "We should concentrate on policing and delivering the best possible service to the public. Let us get on with the job we are paid to do."
Last month, Ghaffur, an Assistant Commissioner at the Metropolitan Police, launched a race discrimination claim against his boss at a self-staged press conference.
He was immediately rebuked in an official Scotland Yard statement and Sir Ian put him on "gardening leave" for the way he had "chosen to conduct himself". (ANI)
