Kolkata, Sept 13 (ANI): West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi today called for a spirit of accommodation to break deadlock over Singur issue.
"Through the Singur discussions on September 5, 6 and 7, I saw earnest participants showing a rare spirit of accommodation. That spirit needs to be operationalised," a Raj Bhavan release said.
"I believe, a solution can still be found in a manner that accords with the law, safeguards the interests of farmers and help in establishing the farm-factory balance," release added.
On Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharya and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee failed to arrive at a consensus on the Singur issue.
Mamta hopes that the ruling Left government in the state will abide by the gentleman's agreement of giving back the agricultural land to the farmers whose land was 'forcibly' taken for the Tata plant.
The meeting was held shortly after the State Government placed ''specific proposals" to Trinamool Congress during talks with the land search committee.
The committee was formed as part of an agreement reached last Sunday between Budhadeb Bhattacharjee and Mamta Banerjee at the Raj Bhavan to look for land available in the Tata Motors project area in Singur for farmers who have not been compensated.
Tata Motors is facing opposition in Singur from where it is scheduled to roll out world's cheapest Nano car.
Trouble began after the West Bengal government acquired 1000 acres of farmland for the car manufacturing plant last year. The government offered compensation, which some farmers rejected and the Trinamool Congress has been demanding that at least 400 acres be returned to farmers. (ANI)
