Potka (Jharkhand), Sept 12 (ANI): Villagers assaulted three officials of Bhushan Power and Steel Company Ltd when they were conducting survey for land acquisition for a proposed plant in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
The officials were waylaid when they visited Potka block to survey the land for construction of a three MT steel plant and a 900 MW power plant. The identified land would be acquired by the State Government and sold to the company.
The villagers, including activists of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), took the three surveyors namely Yusuf Ahmed, Sheetal Kumar Parvaz and Sahdev Singh as hostages, smeared their faces with cow dung and made them eat straw.
Later, they were paraded through the village, wearing footwear garlands for over three hours.
"Continuous protests are on and people have united here against Bhushan Power and Steel Company. They are not ready to give up their land, but still project management have been trying to enter the village with the connivance of brokers. This time, the villagers have caught them here," said B.K. Murmu, a JMM activist.
The surveyors, representing Bhushan Steel, work for a firm of assessors and engineers in Ranchi. They were assigned to carry out the survey for the proposed plant.
"I've come here from Ranchi for survey. I work for Bhushan Company. We came for survey alongside the river bank and not at village," said Yusuf Ahmed.
This is the third such incident on the project workers.
The company is reported to have suspended work on the project in the wake of continuing attacks. (ANI)
