Lahore, Jun.12 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board, (PCB), seems to be confused whether to support former Australian Prime Minister John Howard's nomination for the ICC's vice-president post or not, as board chairman Ijaz Butt has refused to divulge any details regarding its stand.
Butt termed the issue as 'sensitive' and said that the PCB would reveal its stance only during the upcoming ICC executive council's meeting.
"This is a confidential matter and I don't want to make public comments on it.Whatever we have decided, we will discuss at the ICC meeting but this is something the ICC only can give a public statement. All I can say is we are aware of the situation and we know it is an important and sensitive matter," The Nation quoted Butt, as saying.
According to sources, the PCB chief had approached the federal government seeking its advice over the issue, however, he was told that the board was in a better position to take a call on the matter.
Australia and New Zealand have nominated Howard for the vice president's post and under the ICC regulations if four countries reject his nomination, the former Prime Minister cannot get into the apex cricketing body.
Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe have already voiced their refusal to accept Howard's nomination whom they see as a 'controversial' figure.
With India and other ICC member countries likely to support Howard's nomination, Pakistan's vote could prove to be crucial for his fate.
Meanwhile, Butt is under tremendous pressure from media and former Pakistani cricketers to reject Howard's nomination.
"The Australians have been in the lead of shunning tours to Pakistan and Howard made no effort to help out Pakistan cricket in its difficult times. He is also controversial because of his comments about Muttiah Muralitharan and Zimbabwe," said former Test player Basit Ali.
"Pakistan should join Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and South Africa in shunning Howard's nomination," he added. (ANI)
