BCCI raises concern over pay checks

Delhi, Mon, 09 Apr 2007 Nadeem Bhat

April 09: BCCI has hit hard after their world cup debacle and decided to take a sturdy stand over the endorsement issue and slashing the match fee of the cricketers. The BCCI has directed the selection committee to pick a “young team for the tour of Bangladesh.

The board is now facing strong criticism over the decision to check player endorsements. The player’s obviously are not happy with it. Indian skipper Rahul Dravid has decided to discuss the controversial issue with the board. On Sunday afternoon, skipper Rahul Dravid sent a message through e-mail to the media and took an appeasing line on the BCCI’s decision to drastically cut player endorsements.

Dravid said: “It is not correct to project this whole issue as a conflict of commercial interests of the players and the BCCI. Let me clarify that there is no conflict between the players and the BCCI. The interests of the players and the BCCI are inclusive and not exclusive.

According to estimates, advertisements worth Rs 375 crore are riding on Indian cricketers. Dravid's statement: "Irksome issues needed to be creased out", was a hint of the players' concerns.
BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah welcomed Dravid's statement saying any fair representation by players will be considered with the Board Vice-President Rajiv Shukla.

BCCI Vice-president Rajiv Shukla said: "BCCI President has decided that he will consult the players and after ascertaining their views will take a final decision on the endorsements issue,"
However the other vice-president of BCCI, Shashank Manohar, is reported to be the man who is mainly responsible for screwing harder into the player’s endorsement issues.

"I do not think there is any scope for rethinking on endorsement policy. A player may or may not accept, but it is not a problem of the BCCI. If a player is not willing to sign the contract and uphold the conditions of the contract, it amounts to saying that he is not willing to play for India," Manohar was quoted as saying.
