Paine gets nod as Australia's second best keeper-batsman

Sydney, Thu, 08 Apr 2010 ANI

Sydney, Apr 8 (ANI): Cricket Australia selectors have given Tasmanian vice-captain Tim Paine the nod as the country's second best keeper-batsman, and the next in line behind current gloveman Brad Haddin.

The 25-year-old Paine was named alongside Haddin on Wednesday as the only two wicket keepers to be given national contracts for 2010-2011.

South Australian captain Graham Manou was left out, less than a year after being Brad Haddin's replacement in the third Test of the 2009 Ashes series.

Paine has played 17 one-day internationals since making his debut in September, blasting a massive 111 against England at Trent Bridge in just his seventh match.

He thanked the selectors for their vote of confidence, The Sydney orning Herald reports.

"I suppose if you look at the list, (I am) only the second keeper. It's a bit of an insight into where they rank me, which has made me very happy," Paine said.

Queenslander Chris Hartley was also overlooked, despite being named the 2009-2010 Sheffield Shield player of the year and setting a new record for the most runs in a single season by a wicketkeeper with 774. (ANI)
