PoK Supreme Court Chief Justice deposed

Islamabad, Sun, 04 Apr 2010 ANI

Islamabad, Apr.4 (ANI): Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) Supreme Court's Chief Justice, Riaz Akhtar Chaudhry, has been removed from his post.

According to a private television channel, senior judge Manzoorul Hassan Gilani has replaced Chaudhry, who was appointed the chief justice of the apex court during former President General Pervez Musharraf's regime.

According to sources, PoK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider wanted to send Chaudhry on forced leave but the latter refused, following which a case was filed with the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) for his removal from office.

The government has levelled serious allegations against Chaudhry in the case, including blasphemy, personal gains by using his office and acting beyond jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to bring it in direct conflict with the Supreme Court of Pakistan, The News reports.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in and around the PoK Supreme Court building to avert any untoward incident following Chaudhry's removal as supporters of the deposed chief justice rallied outside the apex court and chanted slogans against the administration. (ANI)
