How good will a series win against Bangladesh be?

New Delhi, Sat, 12 May 2007 Deepak Kumar Mohanty

May 12: The Thursday's win over Bangladesh may have lifted the spirits of Indian team but the team needs to win today’s match for registering a series win. After team India’s debacle performance in the World Cup and their losing the crucial game against Bangladesh, the players may have learned their lessons and generated wholesome interest among the team members but it hardly matters for millions of Indian fans now.

In Thursday’s match, the team once again struggled for victory and the frontline batsmen were as disappointing as before. Though the management has taken some important steps and kept some senior batsmen out of the tournament, giving chance to the youngsters. Still there are doubts as whether a series win over Bangladesh will wash away all marks.

Nowadays it is hard to find a single inspiring event or article on Indian cricket in national media, which shows the decline of interest after poor performance in the cricket world cup. It is all but natural, because our cricket control board is always busy in presenting itself as a corporate body rather a cricket governing body.

Team management along with skipper Dravid and manager Ravi Shastri needs to take a hard look at their present strategies, players performance especially young cricketers. Shastri in a press conference admitted that there are many areas for which they need to workout. But those areas should be capitalized upon as soon as possible. Shastri has described them as 'grey areas'.

If there is any reason that creates interest in the present series, it is only India’s lost to Bangladesh in World Cup. So a single or a series win over Bangladesh does not mean that Indian team is back in form. Indian Team lacks in many fields and that was reflected in the last match with sloppy fielding and bad bowling by fast bowler. These need to be solved on time to retain the interest of both the players and the fans.

The Board should arrange for more matches on bounce pitches of Australia, England and South Africa. At the same time we need to develop a better management system, one that gives chance to those who really deserve to play for India and considers their performances not their old time records.
