May 11: Indian tennis star Sania Mirza is gearing up for her come back to world class tennis, after a knee injury prevented her from playing for some time. She will return to action after a gap of two and a half months at a USD 145,000 WTA Tour event at Morocco.
The 20 year old champion, Sania, believes that the clay will be a perfect platform for her to mark her comeback after a knee injury. She suffered a ligament injury while playing in the Qatar Open in Doha, in February.
"Clay is the best surface for me to start playing again after the injury. That is what my trainer, Heath Matthews also feels," said Sania.
It is for the third season successively that injury has hindered her schedule, and customarily coincided with the clay court season.
Although Sania feels sliding on the slippery dirt but the surface poses less danger for her ligaments than twisting and turning on the hard courts.
Earlier intense rehabilitation helped her to go on into the US hard court season, but she failed to make a bang at the French Open.
"That's true but injuries are part and parcel of every sportsperson's life," said Sania, who underwent consistent fitness training and practice for the last fortnight in her hometown, Hyderabad.
After Morocco, Sania would be playing in Istanbul, a USD 200,000 event leading into Roland Garros and playing in Birmingham and Holland to shape her preparations for Wimbledon.
