'Akram accused doctors of negligence when asked to pay dues of wife's treatment'

Islamabad, Fri, 08 Jan 2010 ANI

Islamabad, Jan. 8 (ANI): Wasim Akram accused doctors, who treated his late wife Huma, of negligence only when the former Pakistani cricketer was asked to pay dues for his wife's treatment, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) was told.

Dr Kamaran Cheema, a doctor accused in Huma Wasim's death case, told the National Assembly Standing Committee on Health: "The matter was highlighted when Wasim Akram was asked to pay dues for his wife's treatment."

Challenging the inquiry report, Dr Cheema said the report was not based on actual facts and figures.

"Huma's death was caused by Muco Fungus and it was not possible to diagnose it in early stages," The Nation quoted him, as saying.

The accused doctors also alleged that the inquiry report was totally wrong as it recommended cancelling the doctors' practice licences who did not treat Huma whereas many doctors who were involved in treating Huma were excluded from the list.

The committee was told that it was Wasim Akram's wish to take Huma to Singapore and the decision to administer the injection in the air-ambulance was taken by the flight doctors.

PMDC President Dr Sibt-ul-Hassan said the practice licenses of negligence-accused doctors couldn't be cancelled, as "it required another in-depth inquiry." (ANI)
