India offers help to Nepal to cope with floods

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

New Delhi, Aug 29 (ANI): Nepal's Foreign Affairs Upendra Yadav has said that India has offered to help his country in tackling floods.

Yadav, the chief of the debutant Terai party, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, discussed issues of mutual importance to both countries with his Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday and was happy to receive help from India.

"We talked about solving the problem of floods and related problems faced by Nepal. ranab Mukherjee said the Indian Government will help us in that," Yadav said.

The flooding in Nepal, which officials say is the worst in 50 years, was caused after the Kosi river broke through a dam in Nepal where it originates, unleashing huge waves of water that smashed mud embankments downstream in Bihar.

Mukherjee also held separate parleys with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury.

Mukherjee and Chowdhury exchanged views on issues ranging from bilateral trade to terrorism.

"Terrorism is an issue on which we are together. We believe that this is a menace that has to be addressed. We have agreed to cooperate on this. In fact, we are going to have home secretary level meetings a day after tomorrow," said Chowdhury.

India too has suffered a wave of bombings in recent years. It is unusual for any group to claim responsibility for attacks. (ANI)
