Rajasthan cricket polls spoiled by brawl

Jaipur, Mon, 07 Dec 2009 ANI

Jaipur, Dec 7 (ANI): A brawl took place mid-way between the supporters of the two high-profile candidates CP Joshi and Lalit Modi, who are contesting for the post of President in the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) elections today.

A large number of rowdy supporters gathered both inside and outside the venue of the elections. But despite their scuffles, the voting continued undisturbed.

IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi had lost the last RCA elections in March this year, but internal strife and factionalism in the association led to fresh elections being held today.

The IPL Commissioner declined to accept that his supporters were involved in the clash and described the incident as a shameful one.

"I came in with three people and left soon after," he said adding that there was an attempt on part of the opponents to influence and bully the voters during the voting process.

CP Joshi, the other candidate is the Union Rural Development Minister and President of Rajasthan Congress. He expressed his delight contesting the election saying his main concern was his love for cricket.

"More or less my main concern is love of cricket. I want to see a conducive environment for cricket in Rajasthan. We have a rich tradition and we have produced a large number of cricketers and I feel that tradition should be maintained," said C P Joshi.

Modi alleged that his supporters were threatened and stopped from casting their votes.

"We will have to wait and watch at the end of the day. Some of my supporters are being beaten up and it is unfortunate. We hope for the good of cricket people are allowed to cast their votes. But there are goonda elements out here, who shouldn't be here," he added.

Shiv Charan Mali, a known loyalist of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has also filed his nominations for the RCA elections. (ANI)
