Pugilist Jitender misses, Vijender enters Semis

Indian boxer Vijender Kumar beat the Ecuadorean opponent Carlos Gongora in the 75 kg middleweight category in Boxing to enter the semi-finals of the event. With this victory, he has now assured another medal, at least a bronze for India.

Wednesday brought cheers for Indian sports lovers as Sushil Kumar won a wrestling bronze and then Vijender out-punched his opponent; first taking a lead of 7-2 after the penultimate round and then finished with an impressive 9-4.

However, India’s another medal hope Jitender Kumar lost to Russian Georgy Balakshin in the Flyweight category earlier in the day.

Vijender had earlier stormed into the quarter-finals of the 75 kg middleweight Boxing event on Saturday after he outclassed Thailand's Champuphuang Angkhan 13-3 in a one sided match.

He will now face the Cuban Emilio Correa Veyeux, the winner of Pan American Games Gold Medal Winner in 2007.

The performances of both Sushil and Vijender have not only put a match to the decade long dismissal performance of India in Olympics but also created a record when the Indian contingent will return from Olympic Games with more than one medal.
