Oct 24: Assam Rifles started off their campaign in style after booting half-a-dozen goals against Navy XI, Cochin to advance into the final qualifying round, where they will meet J&K Bank who got the better off Oil India Ltd, Assam 2-0, in the qualifying stage of the 120th Osian’s Durand Cup matches played at the Ambedkar stadium here on Tuesday.
Assam rifles drew first blood in the 33rd minute through Abelsema. Ten minutes later Akumo found the net to make it 2-0. Assam rifles were leading with two goals at the half time.
On changing the ends, the riflemen were at their menacing best and gave no chance to Navy XI players to stage any comeback in the match. They kept scoring at regular intervals to add misery for the Cochin based outfit.
Thoithoiba Singh added one more in the 52nd minute with D Mukhin and Ajit Singh increased the tally later in the 64th and 69th minute of play respectively. Nouba Singh completed the tally scoring the sixth goal for his team 11 minutes before the final whistle.
In the day’s second match, J&K Bank defeated Oil India Ltd, Assam 2-0 riding on the brace of Billal Ahmad. Billal struck a goal each in either half for his team to post an easy victory against no-match Assam outfit.
J&K Bank surged ahead when Billal Ahmad unleashed a powerful shot that went in to goal in the 38th minute. The second goal of the match also came through Billal Ahmad via a penalty kick in the 79th minute, when he was brought down inside the penalty box. He made no mistake in converting the penalty to surge his team ahead.
