Pak parliamentarians demand blasphemy law amendment to prevent misuse

Islamabad, Sat, 08 Aug 2009 ANI

Islamabad, Aug. 8 (ANI): Condemning the anti-Christian riots of Gojra, Pakistani parliamentarians have demanded amendments in the existing blasphemy law in a bid to minimise its misuse.

Jamshaid Dasti of the PPP condemned the Gojra tragedy in the National Assemble, and said there was a need to revisit the blasphemy law, the Daily Times reports.

PML-Q member Akram Masih Gill said the blasphemy law was being used to victimise minorities, especially the Christians.

He demanded that the law be repealed.

Nosheen Saeed, another PML-Q member, said that law should be amended.

The target killings in Balochistan were also discussed in the session when Marvi Memon of the PML-Q condemned the killing of Balochistan minister Rustam Jamali in Karachi.

She said the issue should be discussed thoroughly in parliament through an adjournment motion.

Riaz Pirzada of the PML-Q seconded Marvi, saying Jamali was the future chief of his tribe and his murder would have a far-reaching impact on provincial politics. (ANI)
