Pak Human Rights Commission says Gojra anti-Christian riot 'frightening'

Islamabad, Sun, 02 Aug 2009 ANI

Islamabad, Aug. 2 (ANI): The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has termed the anti-Christian riots in the Gojra tehsil village of Korian region as 'frightening', where protestors have charred down many houses related to Christian families.

The riots broke when local Muslims alleged that three Christians burned the Holy Quran.

Subsequently on Thursday, an angry crowd of Muslims led by preachers burnt down several Christians' houses, the HRCP said.

Six people were reportedly killed and several wounded in the incident, the Daily Times reports.

The Sindh MPAs hailing from minorities, condemning the torching of non-Muslim population in Gojra, appealed to Punjab government to take severe notice of the incident and take up practical steps in this connection.

Addressing the press conference, minority MPAs said that Punjab police did not provide protection to the Christian fraternity, which led to a fourth alarming incident within a month.

The MPAs appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry to take suo moto notice of Gojra mishap and take strict action against the miscreants involved in the incident. (ANI)
