Oct 04: A well-measured 40-yard lob by Ram Mullick in extra-time had sunken the hopes of Om Roy High School (Shillong), as Sagarbhanga High School (Durgapur) prevailed 3-2 over their opponents, in a keen semi-final tussle to enter the final of the Subroto Cup (under-17) football tournament played at the Ambedkar stadium here on Wednesday.
Sagarbhanga School, comprising players from Mohun Bagan-SAIL Academy, became the first Bengal team in seven years to reach the final of India’s most prestigious inter-school tournament.
Sagarbhanga boys shot into early lead in the second minute of the game through Dipendu Dowari but the Shillong boys did not lose their heart and restored parity in the 39 th minute via penalty awarded to them. Lumlangki Dhawa made no mistake in converting the spot-kick.
Ten minutes later, Dowari struck again as Aibor Nonstdu failed to collect Prasenjit's shot and Dowari headed it home on easy rebound. Now it was Durgapur custodian Sudipta's turn to mess up things, as he dropped the Samely Roy Phawa half-line shot in the 52 nd minute in to his own goal piling up his team’s misery.
With the game locked 2-2 at regulation time, Mullick struck a long ranger, two minutes into extra-time, to grasp the 'final' berth for the Bengal school.
In the final, the Durgapur school will take on the winners of NCC (NER) and Rosary High School, Goa, scheduled to meet in the other semi-final on Friday.
The Bengal school’s squad has been reduced to 13 as three of their players were found to be over age.
