Trade union in Kerala protests against labour reforms proposed by Modi govt

Trivandrum, May 30 (ANI): Hundreds of workers of a powerful trade union affiliated to Communist Party of India (Marxist) took to streets in Kerala on Saturday (May 30) to protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi government's decision to revamp archaic labour laws. Workers belonging to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) have been angered by amendments to a 1986 child labour law, aimed at imposing a broader ban on childhood work but also introducing a loophole for family businesses that critics say undermines efforts to end the practice. Addressing a rally, CPI (M) leader A Sampath, said the government was encouraging child labour. Modi's administration said the proposed changes take into account India's socio-economic conditions and would protect its social fabric.
